YOU CAN would like to say a huge congratulations to all our young performers involved in the Twisted Tales Disability Arts Festival during the Whit Half Term.
The members took part in an intensive 3-day project working with internationally acclaimed artists Candoco Dance Company, Liz Fitzgerald-Taylor and Mike Garry, and the week was celebrated with a magical evening of showcase performance at the Lowry Theatre which received wonderful reviews from the audience.
You Can’s own theatre group directed by Eleanor Samson opened the evening with their devised theatre piece exploring classic fairytales. We then saw the Trumpson poets, a group of lads who had written their own poetry with Mike Garry and who all gave an emotional and thought-provoking presentation of their work. Liz Taylor’s puppetry and mask group were next, showing off their wonderful artistic creations, all of which were made by hand by the young people in just 2 days. And then we saw Megan, Ellie and Declan perform a beautiful contemporary dance piece they had created with the Candoco dancers. The evening was complemented with excellent performances from local disability arts organisations DIY Theatre Company and DanceSyndrome, who finished off the evening with a stunning piece of inclusive dance.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Arts Council England for making the festival possible with their funding. And to all the artists and groups involved who brilliantly captured the outcomes we wanted to achieve in inclusive practice and quality performance. And of course, to all the young people, parents, carers and audience members for supporting what was a fantastic week of arts.
The festival has highlighted many new opportunities for developing our arts programme and we are excited about aiming for a bigger and even better programme next time around.
